These are three pictures of a male Cattle Egret in breeding season. At other times, this is just a plain, small, white bird commonly seen accompanying large mammals to grab insects that are stirred up from the grass. The pinkish brown colored plumes on the head and back are absent, as is the red-color on the legs and beak. [Botswana 2009].
In the L image, the Black Egret is already tented-up and fishing. The Black Egret in the R image is seeking a place to set itself up to fish. This is a small bird, but a very effective fisherman. It spreads its wings over the water, making a tent-like structure, and waits until a fish swims by. The darkness under the 'tent' makes the fish easy prey, because it cannot see the bird hovering over it. (Please see next image.) [Botswana].
