A pair of Honey Badgers in a field of long grass. We thought that the one on the right was the female. These two were obviously hunting on this late afternoon. [Serengeti, Tanzania].
A Honey Badger can be a bold, vicious animal who frequently hunts at night. This one was attracted by the smell of our outdoor dinner. It can be quite fearless. I recall an incident where one crawled up on our pick-up truck that was parked in camp and had some food stored in the back. It tore open the food containers and ate all the food. A Honey Badger attracted by some carrion who was reluctant to leave even when our host and my guide tested its tolerance of their close presence. He showed his confidence by not leaving until they crawled up within 3-1/2 feet of him. (Please see next and preceding images/texts. [Deception Valley, Botswana].
Our guide (standing) and the owner of the camp wanted to see how close this already glutted male Honey Badger (lower, L) would permit them to crawl. At about 3-1/2 feet, the animal reluctantly abandoned it's feeding! [Deception Valley, Botswana].
Honey Badger: A male Honey Badger is 25 lbs.of a very tough, fearless fighter. It has been reported that their very loose skin, when they are taken in an attacker's jaws, permits them to squirm sufficiently to inflict a serious bite with their sharp teeth & strong jaws. One of their foods is honey, but they are carnivores who will eat insects, small mammals & reptiles, & carrion.[Deception Valley, Botswana].
