The Martial Eagle is the largest of the African eagles. This is the most beautiful and largest specimen I have ever seen. It has extremely strong claws--said to be able to crush hard objects (bones) in its fist. This species varies considerably in size, as the subsequent images taken in various countries will show. This individual has come to drink at a small stream, as had a Fish Eagle which was previously perching on this same snag. On the martial's arrival, It quickly flew to a bush on the other side of the stream. When this Martial flew across to the same bush, the Fish Eagle left. [Big Tom's, Hwange NP, Zimbabwe],
Double image: an unusual adult Martial Eagle with overall brown coloration. It is smaller than those I have seen in East Africa, but It had all the distinguishing small black spots on its chest and abdomen. (Please see the caption of the previous image). [Botswana].
Martial Eagle: A good view of the bird's white front dotted with the characteristic black spots. I think this is a small specimen. [Kuando, Botswana].
