The Gymnogene is a very furtive and wary raptor. It is one of the most difficult birds I have ever photographed. It would not allow me closer than 100 yards. Fortunately, I had a very long lens.[Mana Pools, Zimbabwe].
When we drove by, the Gymnogene had hold of a lizard's leg, and was working hard to pull it out of its hole. The bird must have been distracted from our presence by its effort to have breakfast, otherwise it probably would have been long gone. The latin name means 'bare face', i.e., no feathers on that part of the head. [Mono Pools, Zimbabwe].
