Crocodile Sun Bathing: This is a large crocodile (12 feet) resting on a rock. [Lafupa River, Zambia].
This crocodile is not being pugnacious just because it has its mouth open, it is merely using one of its means to ventilate body heat. Of course, the most effective would be submerging in the water. [Luangwa River, Zambia].
This young Crocodile had climbed up into this kopje and was resting under a bush. Previously, he had been sharing a pool below that was crowded with catfish, on which it was daily gorging itself. Because of a lengthy drought, the water-level had shrunk too low to cover the crocodile, or to support the crowded catfish which were dying off rapidly. It was taking a rest before continuing a search for a new venue. We were careful to stay back about 15 feet to keep out of range of its powerful tail. Another reason for not antagonizing a crocodile is that it can outrun a man! [ Mondavu Dam area, Zimbabwe].
The two crocodiles obligingly crossed their snouts into an upper half of an 'X'. [Botswana].
One of the crocodiles has caught a fish, which the crocodile has tossed in the air between its jaws prior to swallowing it. [Botswana].
The general explanation for the Crocodile not seizing and eating the big birds (Yellowbilled Stork (L) & Great White Egret (R)) standing in the water only a few feet from them, is that they do not like the feathers. Certainly, the big birds meat-wise would be a good meal --- more so than the small fish they are eating! Also, the large birds must know that they would be safe! [Botswana].
