Galapagos (Dome-Shelled) Tortoise: The Giant Tortoises shown above are quite aged. They have been known to reach 150 years old, perhaps older. This one is edentulous. Individuals have been reported that weigh over 600 pounds. Their foods are grasses and plants, from which they get their water, thus eliminating the need for them to go to fresh water sources. Although their slaughter has been stopped, they are still threatened by egg-predation from the feral pigs, cats, and rats brought to the islands by the early visiting sailing ships and by early settlers bringing pets. [Isabela Island, Galapagos].
